KNOWING WHERE TO TAP (THOUGHTS)

Have you ever heard the story of the giant ship engine that failed? The ship's owners tried one expert after another, but none of them could figure out how to fix the engine. Then they brought in an old man who had been fixing ships since he was a youngster. He carried a large bag of tools with him, and when he arrived, he immediately went to work. He inspected the engine very carefully, top to bottom. Two of the ship's owners were there, watching this man,

Pause: Love and Lemonade By Dr Strive Masiyiwa

This week I just happened to read a very inspiring article in Black Entrepreneur.com from 2014 that I want to share with you: How did a 9-year old, Mikaila Ulmer of Sugar Land, TX, beat out the conglomerate giants such as Kraft, Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Procter & Gamble to land coveted shelf space and a million dollar contract with Whole Foods? Her precocious response? “I don’t know? Do they make theirs with love?” Her company, BeeSweet Lemonade,  is the

Waterways Authority Issues New Guidelines to Sand Dredgers

Dredging Concerned over environmental sustainability with regards to private commercialized dredging of the waterways, the Nigerian Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has read out the riot act to operators of dredging businesses in Lagos State. “When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes. Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why? I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I

Turn your Business into a Technology Company (Part 7) By Dr Strive Masiyiwa

__Maybe it was "esusu," "stokvel," and "mukando" that got me into business after all! In my last post I talked about a traditional savings scheme practiced across Africa. It’s easily the largest savings bank on the African continent, holding billions of dollars with operations in every single country in Africa (each one with its own brand name), and a branch network that goes right down to the village level! Well, it's more than a single bank, it is more of a system. I talked in my post about how technology could be applied to this amazing informal system to make it more efficient, modern and secure. I imagined that African entrepreneurs (including myself) will soon create a multibillion dollar industry around it. The mobile phone and the Internet are the key tools to making this happen.

I'm sure many of you have read that the police is now involved in my issue with Wizkid. Yes, I reported his public threat to me two Sundays ago to the Lagos State Commissioner of Police and I want to explain why I did it! Please pay attention and keep an open mind. I've read a lot online from people saying I don't like Wizkid. Even Wizkid himself thinks I don't like him. Why he or anyone would think so is puzzling to me to be honest. Apart from his achievements after he started insulting me online a few weeks ago...everything else, every success Wizkid has recorded in the last 3/4 years is on LIB. All the awards, all the record breaking feats, his sold out concerts, his foreign magazine features, and collaborations, everything that has built him up to the young man he is today is on LIB. Please verify! Search my blog. Please continue... I was a huge Wizkid fan. The only song I

Major Milestones Reached, New World Record Set in Renewable Energy

Coal and gas-fired electricity generation last year drew less than half the record investment made in solar, wind and other renewables capacity — one of several important firsts for green energy announced today in a UN-backed report. Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment 2016, the 10th edition of the UN Environment Programme’s (UNEP’s) annual publication, launched today by the Frankfurt School-UNEP Collaborating Centre for Climate & Sustainable Energy Finance and Bloomberg New Energy Finance (BNEF), says the annual global investment in new renewables capacity, at $266 billion, was more than double the estimated $130 billion invested in coal and gas power stations in 2015. All investments in renewables, including early-stage technology and research and development as well as spending on new capacity, totalled $286 billion in 2015, some 3 per cent higher than the previous record in 2011. Since 2004, the world has invested $2.3 trillion in renewable energy (unadjusted for

Daily Devotional RHAPSODY OF REALITIES **Keep Making Progress** Monday 11th April: Pastor Chris PhD The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit (John 3:8). When you’re born again, you’re a mystery to the world, because you’re born of the Spirit. The Natural man can’t understand you. By the Spirit, David said, “I am as a wonder unto many...” (Psalm 71:7). That’s what God has made everyone that’s born of the Spirit. However, some Christians don’t know this; so, they live ordinary lives. You’re not ordinary; you’re not of this world. You belong in, and function from, a different realm: the realm of the Spirit.

60 Heads of State Expected as Nations Endorse Climate Deal

Image
A record number of countries are expected to sign the historic climate agreement adopted last December in Paris at a signing ceremony hosted by United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on April 22. More than 130 countries have confirmed that they will sign the Paris Agreement on April 22, the first day that the agreement will be open for signature. This would surpass the previous record of 119 signatures for an opening day signing for an international agreement, set by the Law of the Sea in Montego Bay in 1994.  In addition, more countries have informally indicated that they will sign the agreement, with the numbers increasing rapidly each week. Over 60 Heads of State and Government will attend the ceremony, including French President François Hollande, demonstrating the continued high level of engagement by world leaders to accept and implement the Paris Agreement.

Nigeria and China Sign $23bn Deal for 3 Refineries

Nigeria's state-run oil firm NNPC and China State Construction Engineering Corporation (CSCEC) have signed a $23bn (£16bn; 18bn euros) deal. The two will jointly seek financing and credits from Chinese authorities and banks to build three refineries and a fuel complex in Nigeria. The project would add 750,000 barrels per day of extra refining capacity. NNPC hopes the construction of new refineries will stem the flood of imported refined products into Nigeria. 'Deepen relationships' Nigeria is the world's 12th-largest oil producer and the eighth-largest oil exporter. But the country imports roughly 85% of its fuel needs because of the disrepair and mismanagement of its four state-owned refineries.

Ambode Charges Young Graduates to Develop Entrepreneurial Skill for Self Employment

How to Have a Great Day (Friday 8th April 2016)

Daily Devotional RHAPSODY OF REALITIES **He’s Our Mercy Seat** Friday 8th April: Pastor Chris PhD Being justified (declared righteous) freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God (Romans 3:24-25). Due to Adam’s transgression, man was separated from God. Romans 3:23 says, “For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.” Sadly, many have only stayed on the negative part of this scripture, without taking a step further. The twenty-fourth and twenty-fifth verses have so much faith-building thoughts. Yes, all men sinned in Adam, and fell short of the glory of God, but the problem was fixed in, and by, Jesus Christ.

Turn your business into a technology company (Part 6) By Dr Strive Masiyiwa

__Applying technology to an old, old idea! In some parts of West Africa, they call it "susu." In South Africa they call it a "stokvel." In Zimbabwe they call it "mukando.” __A group of people who know and trust each other get together and they form a savings club. They agree to save a certain amount of money every month and each one of them takes turns to receive a large amount of money. It’s a traditional savings and loan idea that’s been around for a very, very long time. Women in informal markets, in villages, in church groups, do it. Low income workers do it, right across Africa. People who have tried to estimate how much money circulates in these informal savings schemes believe it’s probably billions of dollars across Africa.

Turn your Business into a Technology Company (Part 5) By Dr Strive Masiyiwa

Image Caption: A farmer uses mobile phone technology to compare prices at various markets within, Burkina Faso, West Africa. __Use mobile phones and the Internet to change your business. Most of the fastest growing businesses in the world are businesses that have "re-imagined" well established business areas by introducing innovations based on the Internet and mobile phone technologies. You don’t have to change the business you’re in to make it a "technology company." You just have to "re-imagine" it using the Internet and the mobile phone. Let's look at some examples: # From 'flea markets' to eCommerce: Africa is full of what we commonly call "flea markets" (informal markets). These are small little businesses selling almost anything that we find in every African city. Some are huge -- Mbare Market in Harare, Ikeja Market in Lagos, Kibera in Kenya, to name some of the best known. There you can buy almost anything!
